Sustainable building protection for flat roofs with photovoltaic systems and greenery

Maximum, climate-friendly safety for the installation of PV systems and green roofs

Photovoltaic systems and green roofs are a sustainable solution for climate protection and the energy efficiency of buildings. Special protective layers are required to extend the service life of PV systems and (green) flat roofs and to protect the sensitive roof membranes from damage caused by mechanical loads. Building protection mats and protective layers made from recycled tyre rubber granulate offer the perfect solution here - also for maintenance paths and fouling protection!

Building protection layers made from recycled rubber granulate consist of up to 100 per cent recycled material, which makes a valuable contribution to waste avoidance, climate protection and resource conservation. This makes the sustainable protective layers the perfect complement for renewable energy generation on flat roofs.

Sustainable protection for flat roofs and photovoltaic systems

Flat roofs offer ideal conditions for the installation of photovoltaic systems that place special demands on the roof waterproofing. On the one hand, the sensitive waterproofing layers must be permanently protected from mechanical loads caused by installation systems, ballastings, Temperature fluctuations and Wind loads be protected. On the other hand, expectations regarding fire protection, material compatibility and sustainability are increasing.

The building protection layers made of tyre rubber granulate were designed for the safe, long-term operation of PV and solar installations on flat roofs. They offer a durable, sustainable and effective solution to prevent damage and ensure that the PV systems are secured in position. The membranes protect the roof waterproofing in accordance with DIN 18531/18533/18535 and the flat roof guidelines during installation and operation. The products are durable, can withstand high mechanical loads and are quick and easy to install.

The protective layers are available in different versions for almost every area of application - for example with a flame-retardant and/or self-adhesive finish. They can be customised to the design and manufactured in the desired format or dimensions, but are also available in standard formats.

Safe maintenance routes for flat roofs with PV systems

The regular maintenance of photovoltaic systems on flat roofs places special demands on the roof structure. Maintenance paths must be clearly visible, slip-resistant and permanently functional - without damaging the sensitive roof waterproofing. Roof and walkway slabs made from recycled rubber granulate offer a durable, practical and sustainable solution for this - especially in comparison to concrete slabs.

The sheets are made of elastic rubber granules obtained from recycled old tyres. The rubber sheets reliably protect the roof waterproofing from mechanical damage. They fulfil the requirements of "hard roofing" in accordance with DIN and are resistant to flying sparks and radiant heat. The rubber sheets are available in different colours, which enables the maintenance paths to be clearly marked according to trade: grey for ventilation technology, red for photovoltaics and green for horticulture.

The drainage capacity of the sustainable rubber tiles prevents the formation of puddles. The non-slip surface ensures a secure grip even in wet conditions. As an option, a special aluminium lamination prevents material incompatibilities. The visually appealing tiles can be laid quickly and without heavy equipment using either factory pre-installed connectors or a practical dowel plug-in system - without additional levelling layers such as gravel.

Sustainable protection for green flat roofs

Green roofs make a significant contribution to ecological balance in urban areas. They improve air quality, promote biodiversity and also demonstrably extend the service life of the roof waterproofing. NEW LIFE partners offer innovative solutions made from recycled materials for the long-term protection of buildings with green roofs. The perfect choice for realising durable, efficient and sustainable green roof solutions.

Weatherproof building protection solutions made of tyre rubber granulate offer comprehensive protection for roof waterproofing by protecting against mechanical damage and climatic influences. The protective layers are frost and weather resistant, rot-proof and offer a high drainage effect. Their special structure optimises water drainage and prevents the formation of puddles.

The sustainable rubber mats combine protective and drainage layers and are an environmentally friendly solution made from up to 95 % recycled material. The protective layers are water-permeable and keep out suspended solids so that the roof's waterproofing and drainage function are maintained.

Supplied in sheets, the protective layers can be laid easily and without heavy equipment, saving time and money. They are compatible with rubber-compatible waterproofing systems, fulfil fire protection class Efl (B2) and comply with the relevant DIN 18531/18533/18535 standards. Special hydro protection layers store water and promote the growth of plants without burdening the flat roof.

Sustainable weed protection on flat roofs

Flat roofs with greenery and/or PV systems pose challenges once they have been completed. Unwanted root and plant growth along maintenance paths, in technical zones or under solar installations can have a negative visual and functional impact. To permanently prevent vegetation without the need for regular mowing or the use of chemical herbicides, vegetation-inhibiting protective mats made of rubber tyre granules are an ideal solution.

The sustainable anti-fouling mats prevent unwanted vegetation by removing UV light, effectively suppressing root and plant growth under the mat. At the same time, the mats are water-permeable so that microbiological soil life is maintained and erosion is prevented. The material composition makes the mats permanently rot-proof and flexible enough to adapt to any substrate shape.

Some versions of the high-quality, durable and resistant rubber mats fulfil the requirements for "hard roofing" in accordance with the general building authority test certificate and therefore also offer tested safety in terms of fire protection. The recyclable protective mats improve the carbon footprint of every construction project. They enable specialised companies to keep both technical and green roof surfaces functional in the long term - without additional maintenance.
