Climate-active with green roofs, used tyre recycling, rubber recycling and circular economy

Social organisations can now apply for funding

Willich, 07.12.2020 Nursing and retirement homes, hospitals, schools, kindergartens and other social institutions should hurry: The first application window for the Federal Environment Ministry's "Climate adaptation in social facilities" funding programme is open until 15 December, with the next application window already planned for the first quarter of 2021. The programme aims to protect employees and people in care from climatic stress. One possible measure is the construction of green roofs. They compensate for the progressive sealing of built-up areas and are ecologically valuable. Green roofs improve the urban climate, can store precipitation, help to clean the air and protect the roof from extreme temperatures and other negative weather conditions.

Doubly sustainable green roofs - with an insulating layer made from old tyres

To protect buildings from roots and excess water, a root-resistant roof seal is usually applied at the beginning. On top of this, a drainage system helps to ensure that excess rainwater can run off reliably. Building protection mats made from recycled materials are particularly suitable for the basic work. Marius Amann, Managing Director of "Amann die Dachmarke", relies on building protection materials made from recycled old tyres from KRAIBURG Relastec for green roofs. This was also the case for the realisation of the Sport.Park.Lech construction project. "The architects' top priority was to protect the new space from water ingress, as the old tennis hall had been badly affected by flooding. We completely removed the old roof with an area of 3,000 square metres and a 15 degree pitch and rebuilt it from the concrete ceiling upwards. For the green roof structure, we used a 6-millimetre-thick KRAITECĀ® rubber granulate sheet for structural protection under the drainage and water storage layer. With the sloping, intensive green roof, the building blends naturally back into the surroundings of the Lech mountains. Sustainability begins with the use of the optimum materials. The start has been made with building protection material made from recycled rubber granulate.

About NEW LIFE:

NEW LIFE's partners are Conradi+Kaiser living industries, Estato Umweltservice, Genan, KRAIBURG Relastec, KURZ Karkassenhandel, Melos, MRH and REGUPOL BSW. In Germany alone, around 583,000 tonnes of used tyres are generated each year that need to be recycled. The resulting recycled products, in particular rubber granules and flour, are ideal for the resource-saving development of innovative products in a wide range of applications. These partner companies of the NEW LIFE campaign have set themselves the goal of promoting sustainable products made from ELT and sensitising people to conscious consumption.
