A good thing for climate protection: 10 facts about the benefits, strengths and opportunities of recycling used tyres

In response to climate change, it is now more important than ever to avoid waste, use products for as long as possible and efficiently keep raw materials in the recycling loop at the end of their life cycle. The NEW LIFE initiative shows how this is already working successfully and economically in Germany with a series of clear, easy-to-understand short films. 10 facts about climate-friendly used tyre recycling - from the ecological benefits to high-quality recycled products made from used tyre rubber granulate: https://t1p.de/new-life-10-fakten

Ecological and economic benefits of recycling used tyres

Around 44.35 million used tyres (approx. 525,000 tonnes) for all types of vehicles were generated in Germany in 2022. More than 42 per cent of used tyres were sent for climate-friendly recycling in 2022. Material recycling of used tyres avoids around 225,000 tonnes of waste every year in Germany alone, helps to conserve natural resources, keeps valuable raw materials in circulation, reduces dependence on raw material imports, supports the SME-based recycling industry and saves more than 150,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions.

Ecological and economic benefits of recycling used tyres

The substances/materials contained in used tyres are separated and processed into high-quality secondary raw materials. Textile fibres (approx. 10 percent of the tyre volume) have excellent insulating properties compared to rock or mineral wool. Steel wire from used tyres (approx. 15 percent) is suitable for remelting in steelworks. The granulated rubber from used tyres (approx. 75 percent) is a valuable secondary raw material for the manufacture of high-quality products for a wide range of applications, which are impressively demonstrated in the NEW LIFE short films six to ten.

Possible applications for high-quality recycled products made from used tyre rubber granulate

In the sports and fitness sector, resilient floor coverings made from recycled used tyre rubber granules meet the highest safety, health and performance requirements both indoors and outdoors. The rubber floors are robust, weather-resistant, non-slip, easy on the joints and low-maintenance. In children's playgrounds, they also protect against falls from heights of up to three metres with optional, barrier-free fall protection.

Possible applications for high-quality recycled products made from used tyre rubber granulate

For gardening and landscaping, the spectrum of weather-resistant, non-slip and easy-to-lay recycled products ranges from paving slabs for paths and terraces, grass grid slabs and noise barriers to building protection layers for green flat roofs and weatherproof lamps, vases or design objects.

Safety and protection in road traffic can also be sustainably optimised with recycled products made from rubber granulate. Asphalt modified with recycled rubber powder improves road quality. In garages and multi-storey car parks, protective strips & co. prevent damage to the wall and scratches to the paintwork. Kerb ramps enable sustainable barrier-free mobility.

The used tyre rubber products are also suitable for a variety of sustainable construction and renovation measures in houses, flats and urban development - from wall systems in cellars and garages to weatherproof floor coverings and effective impact sound insulation for balconies and (roof) terraces to building protection layers for green flat roofs with photovoltaic systems.

Elastic flooring systems made from used tyre rubber granulate, with low installation height, high wear resistance and very good hygiene properties for stalls, stable aisles, washing areas, horse walkers and riding arenas ensure greater animal welfare. Robust rubber mats protect floors and walls from injuries and damage.
