With the recently published "Manifesto for a competitive tyre recycling sector", the European Recycling Industries Confederation (EuRIC) is sending a clear signal to politicians and industry: a sustainable circular economy for tyres is feasible - if the right political course is set.
The manifesto is in line with the demands of NEW LIFE and the Alliance Future Tyres (AZuR) to legislators in Germany and Europe. Among other things, it calls for
- Mandatory recyclate quotas in new products to promote high-quality recycled materials
- A ban on the export of untreated used tyres outside the EU to prevent environmental pollution and illegal disposal
- EU-wide end-of-waste criteria for tyre granulate to ensure legal certainty and strengthen the market
- Recycling-friendly tyre design (Ecodesign) for more efficient material recycling
- The introduction of a Digital Product Passport with RFID technology for better traceability
- A chemicals policy in line with the circular economy to keep recyclates usable
The EuRIC Manifesto emphasises that the recycling of used tyres is an indispensable building block for resource conservation, climate protection and innovation in line with the European Green Deal. Clear legal requirements are needed to strengthen the market for high-quality recycling products and create investment security. The NEW LIFE initiative expressly welcomes the manifesto. It demonstrates the importance of a common European strategy for more recycling and lower CO₂ emissions in the tyre sector.
