Ghana interested in a sustainable circular tyre economy

On a 14-day trip to Europe, a high-ranking delegation from Ghana learned about the possibilities of establishing a regional circular economy - primarily for textiles, plastic waste and used tyres. On 18 September, 15 Ghanaian representatives from business, politics and environmental protection visited the renowned Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy. There, AZuR network coordinator Christina Guth presented the ecological and economic benefits of a sustainable circular tyre economy.

Around one million used tyres are produced in Ghana every year. In addition, there is a considerable amount of exported used tyres. The illegal disposal and incineration of these used tyres have serious consequences for the climate and environment in this West African country. Water systems and soil are polluted, as is the air. The disposal and incineration of used tyres also destroys considerable quantities of valuable raw materials that the country of 32 million inhabitants could make good use of.

The Alliance for the Future of Tyres (AZuR), whose partners include the NEW LIFE initiative, is offering Ghana strategic support in establishing a circular tyre economy. The common goal is for used tyres to be recycled by local companies where they are generated. In addition to personal advice, AZuR's services include the transfer of expertise and the provision of valuable contacts from industry, trade, science and politics.

Christina Guth is confident that "the AZuR success model of a circular economy can also be realised in Ghana. We are happy to support the necessary regional adaptation with our expertise."
