This year, the NEW LIFE initiative is once again taking part in the German Sustainability Action Days. This year, the focus is on saving the rainforest in South-East Asia, which is threatened by deforestation. Donations will be collected for RETTET DEN REGENWALD e.V. as part of the campaign.
At around 2.4 million square kilometres, the third largest tropical rainforest in the world is home to a great diversity of animals and plants. As the world's most important air conditioning system, it also stores billions of tonnes of CO2 every year. In the last 30 years, four million hectares of rainforest in Southeast Asia have been cleared for rubber plantations alone. 70 per cent of the natural rubber is used for the production of tyres.
The recycling of used tyres keeps valuable raw materials in the cycle. Approx. 146,250 tonnes of rubber per year alone. This corresponds to the annual yield of approx. 114,700 hectares of rubber plantations. This area (three times the urban area of Cologne) in the rainforest can be saved from deforestation by recycling tyres.
On the NEW LIFE campaign page, a counter clearly shows the area of rainforest that has already been saved from deforestation since the beginning of the year thanks to the recycling of used tyres. In a random roulette, visitors can discover the variety of sustainable recycled products made from the rubber/rubber of used tyres with just one click. Each click generates a donation of 10 cents to RETTET DEN REGENWALD e.V.*.
* The total NEW LIFE donation amount for this campaign is a maximum of 500 euros.
