What is it about?

Large balconies and roof terraces are increasingly serving as meeting places, recreational and adventure spaces. Utilisation concepts on hotel roofs, roof gardens on neighbourhoods or even on schools are a global trend.

When planning and realising roof terraces and balconies, in addition to an attractive design, it is important to provide sufficient impact sound insulation so that living, working and leisure activities do not conflict with each other.

Sustainable recycled products made from tyre rubber granulate are ideal for laying floors, providing reliable impact sound insulation and vibration isolation for roof and floor constructions and for attractive patio design with weatherproof rubber tiles, lamps and vases.

Educational film: Recycling products for roof terraces and balconies

We have prepared a short film to introduce the topic and raise students' awareness of the possible uses and benefits of sustainable recycled products for impact sound insulation and vibration damping as well as for the design of roof terraces and balconies. The film presents selected practical references and possible applications for the roofing trade. Other areas of application for the weatherproof recycled products on roofs, terraces and balconies will be explored and discussed together during the course of the lesson.

Practical workshop: Impact sound insulation made from recycled rubber granulate

In residential construction, the requirements for increased impact sound insulation have continued to increase in recent years. Sound/impact sound insulation measures must be applied or planned on and in parts of buildings whose ceilings are accessible and adjoin parts of the building. This also includes ceilings that are located outdoors, such as terraces, loggias, balconies or pergolas.

The required measures are easy to implement on insulated ceilings, as sound-absorbing materials such as thermal insulation, roof waterproofing or separating layers are already installed. Here, the requirement for increased impact sound insulation and protection of the waterproofing layer in accordance with DIN 18531 can be easily met with additionally laid sound-absorbing mats - e.g. DAMTEC® sonic or DAMTEC® sonic drain plus.

With a reinforced concrete thickness of at least 140 mm, the tested superstructures achieve the values of increased sound insulation in accordance with DIN4109. Depending on the structure, a sound insulation improvement of up to 42 dB (with insulation already underneath) is possible.
In addition, balconies, terraces and loggias must be protected from standing water, as these are among the most sensitive building components. The product DAMTEC® sonic drain plus was developed for this purpose. Thanks to the corrugated profile, this has a high drainage capacity in addition to good impact sound insulation behaviour. This means that large quantities of water can be drained through and under the mat.

NEW LIFE partner KRAIBURG Relastec has summarised the most important applications, specifications and product properties of impact sound insulation for roofers. summarised in a brochure.

Practical workshop: Needs calculator for laying slabs on roof terraces and balconies

Sustainability in the roofing trade includes the efficient use of materials and the avoidance of waste - for example, unnecessary offcuts. The optimum installation of sustainably appealing, weatherproof slabs and tiles made of tyre rubber granulate on roof terraces and balconies is achieved with a Requirements calculator a piece of cake.
The tool can be used to calculate the material requirements for rectangular surfaces as well as for L-shaped or T-shaped walkways.

For the lesson, you can give the students the task of Calculating material requirements for a roof terrace or balconyn.

Creative workshop: Flooring Designer

Floor coverings made of recycled rubber granules are available in numerous designs (optionally with/without fall protection) for every requirement. The surfaces can be provided with coloured EPDM granules for individual design. There are 28 standard colours to choose from. Special custom colours and individual, atmospheric colour mixtures are also available.

The granule designer for individual colour mixtures was already introduced in lesson 5. To give the students an impression of how the different colours look and work in practice, they can try it out in the Flooring Designer try it out for yourself. Photos of running tracks, playgrounds etc. can be individually coloured with just a few clicks.

Idea for the classroom: The best designs for running tracks, playgrounds etc. are sought in class or in working groups.

Educational game: NEW LIFE photo click

Pictures say more than 1,000 words... In keeping with this motto, eight photos of applications of recycled rubber granulate products in sport and play are revealed in this game.

The pupils have to recognise as quickly as possible what is shown in the picture. Each photo is completely covered at the start of the game. Click to remove the first piece of the cover and reveal the first section of the picture. Now you can start guessing. If no one comes up with the correct solution, reveal the second section of the picture and the guessing can continue. This continues until the seventh picture - then the solution is completely revealed.

Tip: You can award points for correct guesses - 7 points for the correct solution after the first image section, 6 points for the correct solution after the second image section and so on. The game can be played as a class or in small groups.
