What is it about?

The use of products that are as sustainable as possible and climate-friendly construction are among the tasks of the roofing trade. As climate craftsmen, roofers are actively involved in the energy-efficient refurbishment of buildings, the installation of photovoltaics or the creation of green roofs, for example. Accordingly, it is important to understand the interrelationships and the importance of environmental protection, to which each individual can contribute - both professionally and privately.

We have prepared a short educational film to introduce the topic and sensitise pupils to the importance of environmental protection in the roofing trade. This can be followed by a short discussion with the class on the importance of environmental protection.

Teamwork: Environmental protection checklist

Trainees in the roofing trade can easily make a personal contribution to environmental protection on a daily basis. For example, they can cycle to school or to the training centre, use energy-saving light bulbs, avoid waste, pay attention to water consumption at work and at home and much more.

In small groups or as a class, pupils collect ideas on what they can contribute to environmental protection in school, leisure and education. The ideas are collected and presented to the class. An environmental protection checklist for everyday use is drawn up together.

Educational game: Environmental taboo

The roofing trade contributes to environmental protection in many ways. To communicate this to the trainees in a fun way, we recommend a round of environmental protection taboo. One pupil has to explain a term from the field of environmental protection to the class without using the term and the four taboo words under this term.

For the game, call a student to the front and have him/her explain the green term without using the red taboo words underneath - without gestures or pantomime! You or another pupil make sure that the taboo words are not used. It is best to set a time limit of 30 to 60 seconds per term for the game. By clicking on the solved card, the next game card appears. The game can also be played in teams or small groups - you can use the Print out tab cards and place them in the Distribute class.

Learning quiz: 5 questions about environmental protection

In a quiz, pupils can once again engage with the topic of environmental protection in a fun way. There are four alternative answers to each question, at least one of which must be correct. The quiz can be played with the whole class in small groups or by each pupil individually. The correct solution should be discussed briefly afterwards.

Photos of environmental protection in your everyday life

In an optional excursion, the pupils can be asked to photograph examples of exemplary environmental protection, but also of offences against environmental protection, in their private everyday lives, in training and at school.

The photos can be collected, discussed in class and published on Instagram. A selection of posts with the hashtag #newlifemachtschule will be published on the NEW LIFE MACHT SCHULE Instagram page: https://www.instagram.com/newlifemachtschule.

An exhibition in the school with a selection of the best photos is also conceivable.
