What is it about?

With greenery and photovoltaics, the roofs of new and existing buildings make a valuable contribution to environmental and climate protection, the success of the energy transition and security of supply. Durable, weather- and fire-resistant building protection mats made from recycled rubber granulate provide sustainable protection for green roofs against damage and moisture. In addition, there are numerous other possible applications for sustainable GaLaBau recycled products on and in buildings - from impact sound insulation for green roof terraces to sustainable vibration insulation.

Introductory film: Recycling products for green buildings

We have prepared a short film to introduce the topic and raise pupils' awareness of the potential uses of sustainable recycled products on green roofs and roof terraces as well as on flat roofs with photovoltaic systems. The film uses specific practical examples to present selected possible uses for landscaping.

Practical workshop: Laying green roof protection mats

The urban planning of the future relies on climate-friendly building greening. Green roofs store up to 80% of rainwater and slowly evaporate it again, which ensures a more balanced climate. The green roof produces fresh oxygen, filters polluted air, absorbs radiation and protects the roof from the weather and mechanical wear and tear.

Robust building protection mats made from recycled rubber granulate are the first choice for protecting the waterproofing and insulation of green roofs from roots and excess water in the long term. The hard-wearing, spade- and rot-proof mats offer maximum protection for the roof and are optionally equipped with a drainage layer.

Using the example of a High-quality building protection and drainage mat for green roofs (PDF) shows what to look out for when laying on flat roofs, balconies and terraces.

Educational game: Plants for green roofs

When creating a green roof, it is important to select a variety of plants that are suitable for the location. This not only has an influence on the maintenance effort - flying visitors in particular are grateful for the great diversity of species. Sedum species (stonecrop) predominate as a plant layer on most roofs with thin-layer structures. However, not just one type of stonecrop should be used per roof. You can find up to 40 species and varieties in well-stocked perennial plant shops, but also from suppliers of green roof perennials.

A species-rich extensive green roof has around 12 different plant species. Perennial grasses are particularly important plants for creating structure on roofs. Other grass species such as feather grasses (Stipa species) are also suitable for green roofs. Blue oats (Helictotrichon sempervirens) are also suitable, but the unsightly flower and fruit clusters should be removed once they have faded.

Task: We have compiled a selection of the most suitable plants for extensive green roofs. The students have to find out the names of the plants from photos and short descriptions and enter them in the list. You can call up the overview on the screen or download, print and distribute.

Learning quiz: 5 questions on green roofs and photovoltaics

In a quiz, the pupils can once again take a playful look at green roofs and the protection of buildings/roofs with greenery and/or photovoltaic systems.

There are four alternative answers to each question, at least one of which must be correct. The quiz can be played together with the whole class in small groups or by each pupil individually. The correct solution should be discussed briefly afterwards.

Click on the graphic to display the resolution in which the correct answer(s) is/are highlighted. Click again to display the next question.

Note: The quiz questions can of course also be printed out.

Excursus: Practical use of recycled products for green buildings

At the end of this lesson, the class or groups can playfully work out in which areas of roofs, terraces, balconies and buildings sustainable recycled products made from tyre rubber granulate are used.

We have prepared a graphic in which the areas of application are marked with dots. Together we can consider which GaLaBau products can be used in these areas. Click on the dot to see the resolution. A further click takes you to a website with specifications, benefits, instructions for use and possible applications for the relevant product groups.
