Introductory film: Recycling products for sport and play

We have prepared a short film to introduce the topic and raise pupils' awareness of the potential uses of sustainable recycled products made from tyre rubber granulate on sports fields and playgrounds. The film presents selected possible uses for landscaping. There are numerous prominent examples of the successful use of weatherproof, customisable recycled products, which can be explored and discussed together in the course of the lesson.

Practical workshop: Laying rubber granulate tracks

All athletics competitions at the 2022 European Championships were held in Munich's Olympic Stadium on a new synthetic running track made partly from recycled rubber granulate. Gina Lückenkemper won gold in the 100 metres on the certified class 1 track. Decathlete Niklas Kaul took the decathlon crown in the final 1500 metres.

To achieve the perfect balance between sports and body protection functions, the base layer of the elastic running track made of recycled granules, which is prefabricated in the factory and bonded on site, has a coating of polyurethane and new rubber granules scattered on top. This makes it resistant to spikes, UV light and extreme weather conditions.

Custom-made products and special solutions are also possible: for example, a special base layer was used for the run-up to the javelin throw and the last eight metres of the plastic surface were additionally refined. This is to prevent slipping during the javelin step.

Practical workshop: Laying fall protection flooring made of rubber granulate

Fall protection surfaces made of sustainable rubber granules protect children reliably and barrier-free from injuries caused by falling from a height of up to three metres. The flooring can be installed in situ on flat, curved or sloping surfaces (up to 45° incline). Variable shapes, imprints and colours can be used to create varied playscapes that appeal to all the senses.

Recycled safety surfaces are more economical in the long term than surfaces with loose bulk materials, as the rubber granules are durable, easy to clean and low-maintenance. Anchoring points for play equipment are seamlessly enclosed, which prevents injuries and contamination. The non-slip, elastic flooring systems are also available without fall protection properties for the decorative design of secondary areas, paths and squares in public spaces.

When laying the fall protection slabs, care must be taken to ensure that the surface is drainage-compatible. The edging can also be made with perfectly matched, elastic rubber elements.

Creative workshop: Flooring Designer

Floor coverings made of recycled rubber granules for running tracks, playing fields, playgrounds and fitness centres are available in numerous designs (optionally with/without fall protection) for every requirement. The surfaces can be provided with coloured EPDM granules for individual design. There are 28 standard colours to choose from. Special colours and individual, atmospheric colour mixtures are also available.

The granule designer for individual colour mixtures was already introduced in lesson 5. To give the students an impression of how the different colours look and work in practice, they can try it out in the Flooring Designer try it out for yourself. Photos of running tracks, playgrounds etc. can be individually coloured with just a few clicks.

Idea for the classroom: The best designs for running tracks, playgrounds etc. are sought in class or in working groups.

Educational game: NEW LIFE photo click

Pictures say more than 1,000 words... In keeping with this motto, eight photos of applications of recycled rubber granulate products in sport and play are revealed in this game.

The pupils have to recognise as quickly as possible what is shown in the picture. Each photo is completely covered at the start of the game. Click to remove the first piece of the cover and reveal the first section of the picture. Now you can start guessing. If no one comes up with the correct solution, reveal the second section of the picture and the guessing can continue. This continues until the seventh picture - then the solution is completely revealed.

Tip: You can award points for correct guesses - 7 points for the correct solution after the first image section, 6 points for the correct solution after the second image section and so on. The game can be played as a class or in small groups.

Learning quiz: 5 questions about recycled products for sport and play
