Making urban spaces liveable and climate-friendly: Online expert talk on sustainable urban planning of the future - register now for free!

How can urban spaces be designed to be liveable and climate-friendly? How can species be protected, areas unsealed, emissions reduced and waste avoided? On 22 April 2026 - Earth Day - we invite you to the municipal climate dialogue from 10:00 am.

Discuss with NEW LIFE experts and editors of KOMMUNALWIRTSCHAFT about sustainable, climate-friendly solutions for the urban development of the future, in which the use of high-quality, sustainable building materials and recycled products plays an important role. Why this dialogue is important now

City planners know: Climate protection starts on our own doorstep. The climate-resilient city of the future reduces CO₂ emissions, avoids waste, helps to protect species and conserve natural resources. At the same time § Section 45 of the Closed Substance Cycle Waste Management Act (KrWG) public sector clients to favour the use of recycled products and particularly durable materials.

The focus of our digital expert forum on International Earth Day is on the ecological and economic benefits, designs and possible uses of Recycled products made from tyre rubber granulate in landscape and urban development.

Used tyres are mechanically processed by partners of the NEW LIFE initiative and Valuable secondary raw materials transformed. The tyre rubber granulate is used to produce a variety of high-quality recycled products that are already being used in urban development projects and municipal renovation measures throughout Germany:

  • Elasticated safety surfaces for playgrounds
  • Joint-friendly running tracks for sports facilities
  • Robust elastic layers for artificial turf pitches
  • Non-slip, weatherproof flooring for outdoor sports surfaces
  • Building protection layers for roofs with greenery and photovoltaics
  • Elastic paving for paths, terraces and squares
  • Lawn grids and edging for green spaces
  • Durable rubberised asphalt for road construction and renovations
  • Kerb and drive-over ramps for traffic calming
  • Sound and impact sound insulation, vibration insulation and much more.

The use of sustainable products made from tyre rubber granulate in the municipal urban development can make an important contribution to reactivating vacant land in settlement areas and urban brownfield sites for residential, commercial or green space projects, thereby minimising the Surface sealing in the outdoor area and to reduce the Urban climate for green roofs, for example, which retain rainwater and cool the air.

The products made from recycled rubber granulate are Weatherproof, non-slip, permeable to water, easy to install and Customisable in shape and colour. In addition to ecological benefits, solutions made from rubber granulate tyres also offer local authorities economic advantages: They are durable, low-maintenance and significantly reduce the cost of maintenance, care, replacement and servicing.

The mechanical recycling of over 20 million tyres per year throughout Germany contributes to this, avoid tens of thousands of tonnes of waste and emissions, to conserve natural resources and keep valuable raw materials in circulation.
